Deep in the woods, under a big old oak tree, lived a little hedgehog named Prickly. He had sharp spines and a soft nose, but he was very scared of other animals.
Whenever Prickly saw a squirrel, he curled into a tight ball. When he heard a bunny, he hid under the leaves. And if a mouse ran by, he trembled all over.
"Why do you always hide?" asked a squirrel named Rusty one day, peeking under the oak leaves.
Prickly just curled up tighter.
"Want to look for acorns together?" she offered.
But the hedgehog didn't answer.
The next morning, Prickly went to the stream for water. Suddenly, he heard a soft cry. It was a bunny named Fluffy, tangled in prickly brambles.
"Help!" the bunny whimpered.
Prickly was scared. He wanted to run away. But the bunny cried so sadly…
The hedgehog took a deep breath and crept closer. With his tiny paws, he carefully untangled the branches. His spines didn't bother him at all — after all, he had his own!
"Thank you!" squealed Fluffy happily when he was free. "You're a real hero!"
Prickly blushed with shyness.
Just then, Rusty the squirrel jumped down from the tree. "See, Prickly? You're so brave! And not scary at all!"
Then a little mouse named Squeaky popped out from a bush. "We all wanted to be your friend, but you always hid!"
Prickly uncurled. He looked at the squirrel, the bunny, and the mouse. They were all smiling.
"I… I was just afraid you wouldn't want to be friends with such a prickly hedgehog," Prickly whispered.
"Your spines are wonderful!" laughed Rusty. "They helped you save Fluffy!"
"And we love you just the way you are," added Squeaky.
From that day on, Prickly never hid. He played hide-and-seek with his friends, collected nuts with Rusty, and listened to Fluffy's funny stories.
And whenever a friend got into trouble, Prickly was there to help. Because now he knew: true friends love you not for how you look, but for the kind heart you have.
Every evening under the big oak tree, the four best friends in the forest gathered together.
