In hot, sunny Africa, there lived a little elephant named Bo. Bo had very, very big ears. They flopped all the way down to his knees.
All the other animals had tiny ears. But Bo's ears were enormous. Bo felt shy. He hid his ears behind big leaves. He pressed them flat against his head when anyone looked.
"Why do I have such huge ears?" Bo sighed.
One day, the sun was terribly hot. It was so hot that even the monkeys hid in the shade. The birds stopped singing. The animals lay still, feeling weak.
Bo saw Peter Rabbit panting hard. Squirrel was hopping to the pond, but it had dried up. Everyone was suffering from the heat.
Suddenly, Bo felt a little breeze. He was fanning himself with his ears. "Oh!" said Bo in surprise. "My ears make wind!"
Bo went over to Peter Rabbit and fanned him. Peter Rabbit took a deep, cool breath.
"Thank you, Bo! That's so cool!" said the rabbit.
Bo fanned Squirrel, then Monkey. All the animals gathered around Bo. He waved his big ears, and the wind blew cool air everywhere.
The heat began to fade, and the animals were happy. They ran and jumped and thanked Bo.
Bo wasn't shy about his ears anymore. He proudly flapped them, and everyone was glad.
That evening, when the sun went down, Bo lay under the baobab tree. His big ears rested on the ground, but he didn't hide them. Beside him slept Peter Rabbit, Squirrel, and Monkey. It was quiet and cool.
