Little Moon Sonny peeked out from behind a cloud. His soft, silver light sprinkled across the dark sky. Every evening, Sonny looked down at the forest below.
"Oh, oh," said Sonny. "Who is still awake down there?"
Under an old fir tree sat a tiny Bunny. He rubbed his eyes with his paws, but he did not want to sleep.
"Little Bunny, why aren't you sleeping?" Sonny asked quietly.
"I'm afraid of the dark," whispered the Bunny.
So Sonny smiled and sang a soft lullaby:
"Hush now, Bunny, close your eyes,
I will shine to light the skies.
Soft and warm, like a blanket bright,
I will watch you through the night."
The Bunny closed his eyes and fell fast asleep under the old fir tree.
Then Sonny heard a tiny squeak. It was a little Squirrel on a branch of an oak tree. She was tossing and turning in her nest.
"Little Squirrel, why aren't you sleeping?" Sonny asked gently.
"I feel lonely all alone," said the Squirrel.
So Sonny sang his lullaby once more, even softer:
"Hush now, Squirrel, rest your head,
Quiet stars are overhead.
Sweet dreams come on silent wings,
You will dream of lovely things."
The Squirrel curled into a little ball and fell asleep.
Then Sonny saw a Hedgehog rustling through the leaves. He was not asleep either.
"Little Hedgehog, why aren't you sleeping?" Sonny asked.
"I didn't hear a lullaby," whispered the Hedgehog.
So Sonny sang for the Hedgehog:
"Hush now, Hedgehog, snuggle deep,
All the forest goes to sleep.
Moonlight shines so soft and bright,
Sleep, little one, good night."
The Hedgehog fell asleep under a pile of leaves.
Sonny smiled. Now all the animals in the forest were fast asleep. He shone all night like a gentle lamp.
"Good night, my little friends," Sonny whispered, and he closed his eyes too.
And the forest was filled with quiet peace, while the gentle lullaby of Little Moon Sonny lingered in the air.
